Tip #2: Set a spending limit
So, lots of people spend like crazy throughout December and never check in on their budget. They just think I’ll worry about it in January. Future you have some advice here: Don’t. Do. That. Track your expenses as you go, so you don’t end up overspending and ruining this month’s and next month’s budget.
Before you set off to join the herds of people in the mall or scour the internet to shop online, talk to your friends and family about setting a spending limit for gifts. This will help you not go overboard and get creative with the gift-giving.
Tip #3: Make a list
Once you know who you’re buying for, make a list of what you need to buy―and then stick to it! It’s all too easy to go crazy while shopping if you don’t have anything to follow. (And no, following your heart doesn’t count, as the heart is all too giving this time of year.) This also goes for grocery shopping for all your holiday feasts and shopping for holiday décor and attire.
Tip #4: Research to find the best deals
Shop around online to find the best deals on the gifts you were planning on buying. You can use shopping comparison sites like Google’s shopping search engine to nail down the best prices. You can also use helpful browser plugins like Invisible Hand to get the best deals. Basically, you go to a site like Amazon.com, Konga.com or Jumia.com.ng, search for your item, and then the browser plugin searches a myriad of other stores to see where the best deal is.
Tip #5: Ask for a discount, and then negotiate the price
One thing that not a lot of people will even think to do is to negotiate the price on the item you’re buying. Often you can offer less and offer to pay in cash, and get a better deal on an item. At least it’s worth trying to see if they’ll knock 10-15% off the price – often they will.
